How to Vote in 2026
The No-Excuses Voting Plan
Election Day is November 3, 2026, but your voting process may start weeks earlier. Rules for registration, early voting, absentee or mail voting, identification, and ballot return vary by state.
1
Check your registration
Confirm your voter record has your current legal name and address. If you moved or changed your name, update it before your state's deadline.
2
Pick how you are voting
Depending on your state, you may be able to vote early in person, by absentee or mail ballot, or at a polling place on Election Day. Do not assume the rules are the same as another state.
3
Know the deadlines
Registration deadlines, mail-ballot request deadlines, early-voting windows, and ballot-return deadlines are set locally. Put the dates on your calendar before they become an emergency.
4
Find your place and check ID rules
If you vote in person, verify your polling location and hours. Check what identification your state requires, if any, and what options exist if you do not have the requested ID.
5
Preview the whole damn ballot
Do not stop at the biggest race. Look for House, Senate, governor, state legislature, judges, county and city offices, school contests, and ballot measures. Your state or local election office can point you to an official sample ballot.
6
Vote and verify what needs verifying
Follow your jurisdiction's instructions for casting or returning your ballot. If you vote by mail, use your election office's official ballot-tracking tools where available. If something goes wrong, contact your local election officials.
